In a tower in Groningen, carillonneur Bob van der Linde picks a new melody every week. A short documentary about a silent choice — and who's secretly listening after all.
Medium · ± 55 words
Above the Academiegebouw in Groningen hangs a 17th-century carillon that does something unusual — it plays complete melodies, and they change every week. Carillonneur Bob van der Linde picks them: pop, classical, a Eurovision tune, a song about a local park. He calls it "sounding heritage". A short documentary about the silent choices that shape a city — and who, despite everything, is listening after all.
Long · ± 175 words
At the heart of Groningen stands the Academiegebouw, a building everyone knows without ever really looking at it. In its tower hangs a carillon nearly 350 years old, and that carillon does something most bell towers don't: it plays complete melodies, not just chimes. Pop, hymns, sometimes something personal. Every week, carillonneur Bob van der Linde picks a new song — depending on season, weather, or what's happening in the world. The Tower That Sings is a short documentary about that choice, and about what he himself calls "sounding heritage". We climb up with the camera, and film below too — on the Vismarkt, among the bikes and voices — to show the contrast between the intention above and the city on its way. The film reveals that more people are listening than you'd expect. And that Bob knows exactly who they are. A Practice Lab production at the University of Groningen.

"It really is sounding heritage. People have been listening to these bells for four, five hundred years here. Everyone, without perhaps realising it — unconsciously, you just absorb it."
